From Nikki’s to Poelani’s, this epic journey isn’t just about the destination, it’s about the culinary pit stops along the way! Picture this: a team of cyclists, fueled by farm breakfasts fit for royalty, embarking on a gastronomic adventure. But before they even pedal a km, they find themselves with a member with a flat tire. Who knew changing a bicycle tube required a squad of principals and a car sales director?
Once back on track, the assault squad, powered up with amapiano beats supplied by Natie, the chief of both support and soundtracks. But oh no, just 9 kilometers in, fate strikes again with another punctured tube. Thankfully, a pathologist, of all people, swoops in to save the day and assist the principals.
As the journey progresses, so does the elevation, with never-ending hills totaling a whopping 1032 meters. But fear not, for the riders are armed with Lungisa’s mantra: ” Pain- there is nothing called pain. The body is just experiencing changes.”
Upon reaching Reitz, our Strava enthusiasts ensure they clock exactly 100k for this leg of the ride, utilizing every driveway in town, much to the locals’ amusement. And what’s a cycling trip without a post-ride stretch session, though touching toes becomes increasingly challenging after riding more stretches of the journey from Joburg to Queenstown.
Finally the day was ended off by an incredible ox-tail stew which Gordon Ramsey himself would be proud of.
Let’s not forget the stats:
-racing snakes reaching speeds of 65 kilometers per hour
-2 of the 3 headmasters taking minor tumbles
– 5kg of fruit cake demolished at tea
– 59 inhaled sandwiches for lunch
-Tour stats for the day showed 997m of climbing, and 870m of descending so Tony does lie.
Lessons learnt: some oaks would rather snap a rim then do the last 5kms uphill.
In the end, it’s not just about the is conquered but the memories made and the calories consumed along the way. Cheers to another unforgettable journey from Villiers to Reitz, or as we fondly call it, from Nikki’s to Poelani’s!
